important article
from this site's author...
Americans
grow increasingly "unimpressed"
with their local newspapers The
community daily newspapers our parents used to get every morning, (and we
tried for a while too), are not like they were way back when... Recent
polls show that Americans do not trust the good old newspaper any more!
They come to that, mainly, because they all seem to have left the
traditional "just the facts" type of reporting and are now reporting
nothing more than opinions, and many of those are based on sources that
are not credible! Americans are not stupid, they know
the difference between opinions and reporting. They know that the
editorial section is no longer the only section with opinions -- nope! The
papers reflect the political party of the owner's preference, (and they
hire the writers that go for their own opinions. They have money coming in
from various places and need to "pat the backs" to get what they
want.. They are heading to extinction at this rate and I know it is
frustrating for me, for them, for you and all of America who is used to
the old school of facts reporting with out the fluff, the half truths and
the misconceptions to help us draw our conclusions. We
chose how we felt by reading the facts, weighing them out next to our own
views, beliefs, and our personal knowledge -- we got to have perspective
fresh, un-tampered with and over coffee in the morning at work... The
part of this now common 'think our way' reporting that newspapers (and TV
news too) are feeding us that I find to be inexcusable is the notion that
they somehow got that tells them we, as readers, are not able to handle
the whole truth and not able to process facts on our own. It's insulting
to me that these people think we are not able to pick a side, so they do
it. They tell us what to think, what to believe, how to vote, what company
we like, what celebrity is great and what to think of each other. I am
sick of this -- all of it. In old school, way
back when I was in college and taking journalism, the rule was that there
is "no room for opinion" in journalism - period! If someone
wanted to be a writer they chose either journalism or all the other stuff.
The journalist had no opinions that mattered, they had a job, a duty to
report to America what was going on and that's it. There were plenty of
opportunities to write opinions in editorials, books, plays, movies, songs
and other forms of media. But the service of journalism, they were to
report and let us all decide. I think that we allow
this, little by little... we allow others to print this stuff and go
unchallenged. Many papers are reporting that their subscriptions were
falling, fast, (New York Times, LA Times and many others). We need to
stand up to them and tell them we want our thoughts back and the
"just the facts" responsible reporting - or they won't be
reporting to us. Changes happen when people speak up for themselves and
think for themselves. The following paper is one
of the few newspapers that does not do this opinion slanting stuff and
they let us decide and report facts... no wasted time of fluff and such,
just good reporting... You may want to try them out, they are having a
huge special. In the meantime, write your local paper editor and tell him
you want the old school journalism standards again... you
decide. USA TODAY -
