Irish Limericks

A limerick is usually a funny and very short tale that is five lines long and rhymes

A mouse in her room woke Miss Doud
Who was frightened and screamed very loud
Then a happy thought hit her
To scare off the critter
She sat up in bed and meowed

Irish Blessings

Who gossips with you will gossip of you

Beware of people who dislike cats

I believe in the sun when it's not shining,
I believe in love even when I feel it not,
I believe in God even when he is silent

A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures

Put silk on a goat and it is still a goat

Why did God invent whiskey? So the Irish would never rule the world.

The full person does not understand the needs of the hungry

Who gossips with you will gossip of you

The Irish - Be they kings, or poets, or farmers, They're a people of great worth, They keep company with the angels, And bring a bit of heaven here to earth You'll never plow a field by turning it over in your mind

Everyone is nice till the cow gets into the garden

May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life's passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

Trinity Knot, - christian symbol, irish symbol - free clipartTriquetra - Irish symbol -- Father, Son, Holy Ghost

For Christians, the Triquetra represents the Trinity:  - The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (or, 3 entities as one God) Its three equal arcs symbolize equality. The never-ending continuous lines convey eternity, and the interweaving signifies indivisibility.

For Jewish Individuals it symbolizes "three" which is extremely important in Judaism - the human condition is seen as "Tripartite" - man's relationship to himself and the world of his mind ~  man's relationship to others in the current world ~  and man's relationship with God.

The Claddagh
(you may download this Claddagh clipart free, just do not link to the art or clipart on this page - download to your computer and then use)

Ireland - Claddagh (ring) symbol - signifies love, friendship and loyalty.

Although the Claddagh ring was first produced in the 17th century during the reign of Queen Mary II, the elements of the Claddagh design are much, much older.

The design of this ring symbol and the customs associated with it stemmed from the Irish fishing village of Claddagh which is just outside the old walls of the city of Galway Ireland

The facets of the Claddagh symbol correlate to the qualities we find in meaningful relationships - friends and lovers. The Heart means Love ~ he Hands mean Friendship and the Crown means Loyalty. The idiom which is associated with this symbol when one gives the ring to another is..

 "Let love and friendship reign."

Tradition tells us that when someone gives it to a single friend, the friend normally wears it on their right hand on their ring finger and the design points outward. When worn in this way, it signifies that the wearer is single and available and may be looking for a relationship with another..   TURN the ring with the design facing inward, (the crown top facing toward the hand - not away), signifies that the wearer is single, but in a relationship and the wearer's heart is captured - taken!

When the wearer of the Claddagh ring is engaged to be married - it is then worn on ring finger of the left hand with the design, (the crown top) facing outward (away from body/hand). Finally, when it is worn on the left hand, ring finger and the crown is facing in, (toward body/hand), it means that the wearer is married.

Popular world wide (since the potato famine in the 1800's sent a good deal of the Irish off to America and other parts of the world), the Claddagh is well know. In addition to being a gift from a friend and/or a lover - the ring has been often an heirloom in families and traditionally mothers pass their Claddagh down to their daughters.
