Touched with Fire:
Manic-Depressive Illness
and the Artistic Temperament. Kay
Redfield Jamison.
Publishers Weekly
Drawing from the lives of artists such as Van Gogh, Byron, Virginia Woolf and
several others. Jamison examines the links between manic-depression and
creativity and informs it's readers of the biological foundations of manic
depression as relates to artists who have the illness. Byron's
life is discussed in considerable detail, is used as a particularly fascinating example of the complex interaction among heredity, mood, temperament, and poetic work. Jamison reviews the
substantial, rapidly accumulating, and remarkably consistent findings from biographic and scientific studies that demonstrate a markedly increased rate of severe mood disorders and suicide in artists, writers, and composers. She then discusses
reasons why this link between mania, depression, and artistic creativity might
exist

The Dance of Connection:
How to Talk to Someone When You're Mad, Hurt, Scared, Frustrated, Insulted, Betrayed, or Desperate
A columnist with New Woman Magazine as well as a staff psychologist and a psychotherapist at the Menninger
Clinic, Lerner's mass appeal results from her ability to break down difficult psychological concepts into plain
language. Filled with compelling personal stories and case examples, Lerner outlines bold new
"voice lessons" that show us how to speak with honor and personal integrity, even when the
other person behaves badly. Whether we're dealing with a partner, parent, sister, or best friend, The Dance of Connection teaches us how to navigate our most important relationships with clarity, courage, and joyous conviction. Lerner then discusses problems that can surface in adult relationships, including
how adult children may talk with their parents. She shows that criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling all have the
potential to cripple or destroy a marriage. Each chapter analyzes a specific problem with case histories and possible solutions or outcomes. What results is an accessible and well-organized work that, with its predecessors, belongs in all libraries.

An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness
By Kay Redfield Jamison, PhD - an international authority on manic-depressive
illness, and one of the few women who are full professors of medicine at American universities - a
remarkable personal testimony: the revelation of her own struggle since adolescence with manic-depression, and how it has shaped her life. Vividly, directly, with candor, wit, and simplicity, she takes us into the
fascinating and dangerous territory of this form of madness - a world in which one pole can be the alluring dark land ruled by what Byron called the "melancholy star of the imagination," and the other a desert of depression and, all too frequently, death. A moving and exhilarating memoir by a woman whose furious determination to
learn the enemy, to use her gifts of intellect to make a difference, led her to become, by the time she was forty, a
world authority on manic-depression, and whose work has helped save countless lives.
Jamison's memoir springs from her dual perspective as both a well-known psychiatric expert in manic depression
and a sufferer of the disease. This book is rated 5 starts out of 5 by

The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide: What You and Your Family Need to Know
Features: After covering medication and diagnosis of bipolar disorder, the author breaks down self-management into four steps: 1) accepting the diagnosis, 2) becoming an expert on one's moods, 3) educating family and friends, and 4) enlisting support. Recognizing how misunderstood the illness is and how much more resistance to treatment occurs, this book attempts to address both of these issues. I liked the proposed contracts and forms suggested as extra tools and the book's organization.
Purpose: In addition to medication and therapy, the author proposes that self-management is an important tool that can be used by the patient and the family to help recognize the symptoms and help prevent more severe episodes. Any attempt to involve the patient and family in care is a worthy one. This book accomplishes its objectives with this easy-to-read manual.

Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia
Wasted is exactly what a book about eating disorders should be: frightening. With Hornbachers
gripping prose, Wasted has the potential to do for eating disorders what Go Ask Alice did for drug abuse: scare young readers away from killing themselves.
Based on research and her own battle with anorexia and bulimia, which left her with
permanent physical ailments and nearly killed her, Hornbacher's book explores the mysterious and ruthless realm of
self-starvation, which has its grip firmly around the minds and bodies of adolescents all across this country. Hornbacher became
bulimic at the age of 9, anorexic at 15, and went back and forth between the two until she was 20. In 1993, when she weighed 52 pounds, doctors predicted she had a week to live.
Hornbacher's story is of a journey to self-destruction and back again, raw enough to make even the
most jaded readers flinch and honest enough to make the most cynical pause
forethought. But while recounting her own pain, flaws, and failures, Hornbacher successfully avoids the traps of self-pity and reachiness.
Wasted is a book that can save lives. Rated 4 1/2 stars out of 5 by

How to Cook Your Daughter
By Jessica Hendra, Blake Morrison.
How does a little girl find her way in a world where nothing is sacred? In 2004, Tony Hendra's memoir Father Joe: The Man Who Saved My Soul, spent thirteen weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. The book detailed his life as a comedian who helped launch the careers of John Belushi and Chevy Chase, wrote for and edited The National Lampoon, and performed in such cult classics as This Is Spinal Tap, even as he overindulged in alcohol and drugs. But there was a glaring omission in his supposed tell-all confessional: the
sexual abuse of his daughter Jessica. -
After more than thirty years of silence, Jessica faced a harrowing choice. In this
powerful book, she reveals how she came to the decision to publicly confront her father,
sacrificing any hope of reconciling with him and setting into motion a New York Times investigation that shocked the literary world when it broke the story of
abuse. But Jessica's account is neither a minor footnote nor an angry response to her dad's bestseller. How to Cook Your Daughter -- titled after a satirical piece her father wrote only a few months before the abuse began -- is an unflinching and unsentimental look at
a childhood that never was, set in a time and place straight from the pages of the outrageous magazine that her father helped to create. --
Against the backdrop of the 1970s New York comedy scene, the memoir traces Jessica's journey from a
lost and abused child to a young woman struggling with bulimia and anorexia to the mother of two who becomes convinced that challenging her father is the only way to reclaim a life that never seemed her own. One
Reviewer writes; "I found a bookstore that had put this out early and I devoured it -- no pun intended -- in a single night. I had read
Jessica Hendra's father's book, Father Joe, and subsequently about her allegations that he had molested her as a
child. Anyone who has read Father Joe knows that it was Tony Hendra's 'confessional.' Anyone who reads How to Cook Your Daughter knows that he didn't end up confessing much. In this book, Jessica lays out a childhood that is
both amusing, troubling and shocking. Don't be fooled into believing that this is just a book about being abused as a child. Anyone intrigued by the comedy scene of the 1970s will be fascinated by Jessica Hendra's recounting. The way the book is written turns a story I knew a lot about into a virtual cliffhanger, and in the end, the book
packs more power than even Father Joe. As I looked at the two, I asked myself which one made me think harder. The answer:
this one."

Bipolar Child: The Definitive and Reassuring Guide to Childhood's Most Misunderstood Disorder
Bipolar disorder -- manic depression -- was once thought to be rare in children. Now researchers are discovering that not only can
bipolar disorder begin very early in life, but also that it is much more common than ever imagined. Yet the illness is
often misdiagnosed or overlooked. Why? Bipolar disorder manifests itself differently in children than in adults, and in children there is an overlap of symptoms with other childhood psychiatric disorders. As a result, these kids may be given any number of
psychiatric labels: "ADHD," "Depressed," "Oppositional Defiant Disorder," "Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder," or "Separation Anxiety Disorder."
Too often they are treated with stimulants or antidepressants--medications that can actually worsen the bipolar condition.
The Bipolar Child is rich with the voices of parents, siblings, and the children themselves, opening up the long-closed world of the families struggling with this condition. Already proven, in its original edition, to be an invaluable
resource for parents whose children suffer from mood disorders, as well as
the professionals who treat and educate them, this book will prove to have major public health significance.

Dolphin's older sister, Star, loves Marigold too, but she's tired of looking after her. So when Star's dad shows up out of the blue and offers to let the girls stay with him, Star jumps at the opportunity. But Dolphin can't bear to leave Marigold alone. Now it's just the two of them, and Dolphin is about to be in over her head. . . .

The family is constantly on the brink of being homeless and the girls essentially have to take care of themselves and their mother. Marigold is obsessed with Star's father, whom she hasn't seen in years and who doesn't even know that he has a daughter. She finds Micky at a concert and is convinced that they will now reunite. Star goes to stay with him because she can't handle Marigold any longer, leaving Dolphin with a mother who is less and less stable. After a complete breakdown, she is put in a
psychiatric ward. The author doesn't shy away from the difficulties, but there's
humor here, too. (Fiction. 11-14)

The Hungry Years: Confessions of a Food Addict
William R. Leith. From his many years as a journalist, Leith knows that being fat is something people find more
difficult to talk about than nearly anything else. But in The Hungry Years he does precisely that. Leith uses his own pathological relationship with food as a starting point and
reveals himself, driven to the kitchen first thing in the morning to inhale slice after slice of buttered toast, wracked by a physical and emotional need that only food can satisfy. He travels through fast food-scented airports and coffee shops as he explores the all-encompassing power of advertising and the unattainable notions of
physical perfection that feed the multibillion dollar diet industry. --
Fat has been called a feminist issue: William Leith's unblinking look at the physical consequences and psychological pain of
being an overweight man charts fascinating new territory for everyone who has ever had a craving or counted a calorie. The Hungry Years is a story of food, fat, and
addiction that is both funny and heart wrenching. -- "The Hungry Years is a confessional,
satirical, wise, tragic, truly original book about addiction, food and what's really inside a fat man that's trying to get out. The Hungry Years defies categorization - it's part
memoir, part diet book, part comedy, and part sugar rush. It's the first real book about body image for men,
and it breaks taboos, breaks new ground, and breaks your heart. William Leith has finally fulfilled his always huge potential. I loved it" (cultural critic and author of White City Blue) - Tim Lott

Callie faces some difficult emotional hurdles as a "guest" at the residential treatment center where she has been sent because she cuts herself with sharp objects.

Cutting by Steven Levenkron. Close to two million Americans and possibly more suffer from the psychological disorder of self-mutilation. The most prominent public admission was that of
Princess Diana. Written for the self-mutilator, parents, friends, and therapists, Levenkron unravels step by step the mindset of the self-mutilator, explains why the disorder manifests in self-harming behaviors, and, most of all, describes how the self-mutilator can be helped. Through riveting case studies and conversations with his patients, the
profile of the self-mutilator emerges: someone who is typically fearful of people and abandonment, whose attachments are hostile or tenuous at best, who lacks interpersonal trust, and who often can't stay focused in a relationship of any depth. Cutting tells the reader
where to turn for help and offers important skills the self-mutilator must learn - what Levenkron calls the "Attachment-Dependency Trust Axis" - in order to overcome the affliction.

Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers
Robert Sapolsky's acclaimed Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers combines
cutting-edge research with a healthy dose of good humor and practical
advice to explain how prolonged stress causes or intensifies a range of physical and mental
afflictions, including depression, ulcers, colitis, heart disease, and more. When we
worry or experience stress, our body turns on the same physiological responses that an animal's body does, but we usually do not turn off the
stress-response in the same way -- through fighting, fleeing, or other quick actions. Over time, this
chronic activation of the stress-response can make us literally
sick. This thoroughly updated third edition, which features new chapters on
sleep disorders and addictions as well as new sections on gender differences, anxiety, weight gain, post-traumatic stress disorder, and stress management, is richer than ever with
insights into how the nervous system responds to stress and how those responses can be controlled.
EXCERPT From Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers: "Regardless of how poorly we are getting along with a family member or how incensed we are about losing a parking spot, we rarely settle that sort of thing with a fistfight. Likewise, it is
a rare event when we have to stalk and personally wrestle down our dinner. Essentially, we humans live well enough and long enough, and are smart enough, to generate all sorts of
stressful events purely in our heads. How many hippos worry about whether Social Security is going to last as long as they will, or even what they are going to say on a first date? Viewed from the perspective of the evolution of the human kingdom,
psychological stress is a recent invention. If someone has just signed the order to
hire a hated rival after months of plotting and maneuvering, her physiological
responses might be shockingly similar to those of a savanna baboon who has just lunged and slashed the face of a competitor. And if someone spends months on end twisting his innards in
anxiety, anger, and tension over some emotional problem, this might very well
lead to illness.

His Bright Light: The Story of Nick Traina

and the lessons she learned during his courageous battle against darkness.
Sharing tender, painful memories and Nick's remarkable journals, Steel brings
us a haunting duet between a singular young man and the mother who loved him -
and a harrowing portrait of a masked killer called manic depression, which
afflicts between two and three million Americans." "Nick rocketed
through life like a shooting star. Signs of his illness were subtle, often
paradoxical. He spoke in full sentences at age one. He was a brilliant,
charming child who never slept. And at first, even his mother explained away
his quicksilver moods. Nick always marched to a different drummer. His gift
for writing was extraordinary, his musical talent promised a golden future.
But by the time he entered junior high, Danielle Steel saw her beloved son
hurtling toward disaster and tried desperately to get Nick the help he needed
- the opening salvos of what would become a ferocious, pitched battle for his
life." "Even as he struggled, Nick's charisma and accomplishments
remained undimmed. He bared his soul in his journal with uncanny insight, in
searing prose, poetry, and song. When he was finally diagnosed and treated, it
bought time, but too little. In the end, perhaps nothing could have saved him
from the insidious disease that had shadowed him from his earliest years.

Life Interrupted: The Unfinished Monologue
A much darker essay than Gray's early work. The late monologist's last work, strongly reliant on
tributes delivered by friends and family at two memorial services conducted after his 2004
suicide. "Unfinished" may be the key word to describe both Gray's life and this
book, which is very short. Gray committed suicide at age 62 by leaping off the Staten Island Ferry into frigid New York Harbor. In the title 40-page essay, Gray recounts with typical mordancy the accident and his subsequent hospitalizations in both Ireland and New York. The volume also includes a
10-page essay written on the tenth anniversary of his first meeting his wife, Kathy Russo.
Paying tribute at his memorial included his widow, his older brother, Rockwell Gray and fellow performers Eric
Bogosian, Laurie Anderson and Eric StoltzParticularly. Particularly touching are the recollections of Gray's teenaged stepdaughter Marissa, describing her struggle to live with the suicidal, broken man her father became after the car accident. Another comes from fellow author Roger Rosenblatt, who noted of Gray: "No one ever could be so sublimely miserable." The portrait of Gray that emerges is one of an adventurous, open-hearted, troubled soul who spent his life searching for "the perfect moment." This, he apparently never found.

Questions & Answers About Depression and Its Treatment

K. Goldberg, MD. For patients and families, provides clear explanations and
answers to questions about depressive illnesses. From Library Journal: Writing
for the estimated 12 million Americans who have battled or who are currently
facing depression, Goldberg (psychiatry, Columbia Univ.) answers the questions
that are most often asked by depressed patients and their families. In an

symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments of depression and other mood disorders.
Special considerations such as suicide, elderly and adolescent cases,
bereavement, and questions of law are also considered. Although the addition of

Bipolar Psychopharmacotherapy: Caring for the Patient
Bipolar disorder is often not recognized as an illness, and people may
suffer for years before it is properly diagnosed and treated. Like diabetes or heart disease,
bipolar disorder is a long-term illness that must be carefully managed throughout a person's life. Pharmacotherapy is central to the
acute treatment and long-term management of the disorder and as there are several classes of drugs, which are often prescribed concurrently,
treatment issues are complex.
This title examines major pharmacological treatments in the different phases of bipolar disorder. Chapters are devoted to commonly use pharmacological treatments with a critical review of the existing literature.
Each chapter includes information not only on studies that have been published
but also on new treatments that have been reported in peer reviewed scientific meetings.

Today I Will Remember. Read and/or Post Affirmations and/or Thoughts...
Sharing with each other gives those in need a gift to receive when they may need
it the most! Those who are struggling in some way and need to find that 'special
spark' - read it from someone who by chance or design, left an affirmation or
thought that can help you in your time of need. So, why not go in and read a
bit, see how you feel... And those who - at this moment - have a small or large
victory, can take a moment to share an affirmation or thought that will spark
that certain 'something' in one or more people out there who really need to hear
you, the one that they will relate to over and above the others, (for some
reason). Leaving your footprint that way can effect people today, this week and
even next year, so drop in and share a bit!
Write an Affirmation, inspirational quote or personal thought that has helped
you make it though a tough time...
And to those who hurt, find that certain voice, come on in and read what someone
special left you!
