Real quickly, this is a small sample of the articles found at this SAD Seasonal Affective Disorder Site. Lots of people get this crippler as the month's turn to the cooler and darker ones... This is a very real illness. Reading the articles three I found the information to be real detailed and well presented. You can apply most of the remedy suggestions that are given her to bipolar disorder / manic depression and the results should be less of a "blow" when in a mania and less often occurrences for both depressive and manic episodes, worth your read... lt

An Estimated 35 million Americans suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Most scientists believe that SAD and other mood and sleep disorders are associated with shifted circadian rhythms (i.e. body clock). Those with ‘weak’ circadian rhythms need a very bright stimulus of light to reset their body clock... The

Because we are a monthly magazine, we change the page often
& you may wish to bookmark this page! "...He is all fault who hath no fault at all. -Alfred, Lord Tennyson Bipolar patients are three times more likely to be
diagnosed as having diabetes mellitus than non-bipolar I'm Already Disturbed The following exercise will use both receptive affirmation as well as planned
affirmation. Receptive affirmations are ones which occur spontaneously in your
thoughts. For instance, whatever enters your mind after you state "I am
tranquil." Planned affirmations are affirmations you state which hold a
particular desired effect. If helpful, programmed affirmations encourage
self-confidence and capability. Together, you will learn, "teach"
yourself a certain desired trait or behavior etc., in this case, tranquility! There are many times, (in the matter of just a day on occasion), that I feel
the need of tranquility. It is a hunger, desperation at times, especially
when I come to realize that at a particular time, I am manic, not just
excited.... then the rage, the relationship problems, life's deadlines, kids,
taxes, pollution, politics..... YUKIES! It's such a rat race "out
there" in the world with all the normal stress and pressures that come with
day to day life and living... but to add to that an illness where tranquility is
tough to come by... and the pressures can get so high. That's all dangerous to
our mental, emotional and physical health... dangers we just don't need... Ah yea, tranquility... So, what then? Well, it's not simple for many of us in many areas.... and the
answers are seemingly far away..., but, some of the exercises, steps we
take........ that we practice and work with... is a super right answer! If each
new avenue tried and each new theory looked into works just a pinch... a
bit....... works towards recovery, health and a more stable and
joyful life/living....... what you are doing is that right answer! Because we
are growing and not allowing ourselves to stay in one miserable place PLUS the
health thing that we are doing is doing at least a bit..... we won two
ways...... two! ah, progress... It's so very healthy that we are even here ...online and on this site page!
What that should say to you is that you DO care, you are important to
you........ (as it should be), and you ARE growing....... better pat yourself on
the back for that one.... many folk in the world can't seem to give themselves
credit when they make efforts and try to grow... let alone grow! You STATE of
MIND is more important than you may know.... the power is immense and hardly
used near it's capacity by most! Tranquility.... it's a great thing that we can
reach!!! Your mind and it's powers can and will let it..... keep open, use the
exercise below and let us know how it all worked for you! Take a few moments to realize what allows you to be more your True Self, to
be more of what is "natural for you". The following assignment will
focus will be on learning how to embrace "the natural you" by
experiencing tranquility through the use of affirmations. You may experience
some inner struggles with some of the following affirmations... you don't have
to do them, BUT, you should come back to them... they are very important
ones.... you need to understand why you are struggling with them.... Do the rest
and as you release your 'natural' tranquility you will notice that you will also
begin to release any areas in which you may be resisting, or which cause you to
avoid a certain affirmation... and that (or those) which were way too difficult
to believe or feel or they were "not you" ...will perhaps appear
differently... Remember, the mind is awesome and powerful! Let's do the tranquil thing for ourselves, or sanity in an insane and rushed
and stress filled world.... let's make this easier for us so that our fight over
the manic depression is more simple... a lot more simple than if you just didn't
care or try! Here's you "homework" for this month... You learned the alphabet, right? You certainly were not
born knowing that and lasted a few good years without needing it, yet... you
learned it! Same here. You practice until you get there..... Any one who has
tried this or is about to... let us know how it worked in your life and with
your illness. We will post them! It's such below

feature article one:
diabetes mellitus and bipolar disorder linked
individuals. As reported in the September issue of the American Journal of
Psychiatry, Dr. Frederick
Cassidy and his colleagues at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North
Carolina, diagnosed
diabetes mellitus in 9.9% of 345 patients having bipolar disorder, manic or
mixed subtype. Only 3.4% of
age-matched and race-matched cohorts in a previous study of the general U.S.
population were
diagnosed as having diabetes mellitus.
The authors recommend that bipolar patients be screened for diabetes mellitus,
noting that there may be
a genetic relationship between the two diseases. Other possible factors in the
development of diabetes
mellitus in bipolar patients include the use of psychotropic medication and
weight gain.

Lithiucarbonate, an alkali metal often prescribed for manic depressive symptoms,
was discovered in 1817 to be useful in treating a wide range of ailments. By the
late 1880's, lithium was being prescribed for repeated depressive symptoms.
This substance produces complex effects in the brain. According to one source,
"Lithium is the most widely used treatment for bipolar disorder. Sources
indicated some three fourths of manic patients treated solely with lithium
respond to the treatment, (Lenox and Manji 1997).
Lithium is sometimes the only prescription drug given to a person suffering from
bipolar disorder. Lithium might be used in combination with carbaneuroleptic
medications that are use to treat psychosis.
Lithium seems to work better for some patients than for other. (Lenox and Manji
1997)
Few medications can be taken without adverse effects. Possible negative side
effects of lithium induced fatigue, nausea, weight gain, trembling, loss of
memory, hair loss and thyroid problems.
Doctors must also watch for the potential long-term effects of mood stabilizers
on a woman's reproductive system. One study has shown that women treated for
epilepsy with valproate have unusually high incidence of certain menstrual and
related problems. Interestingly, children and teenagers seem to have fewer and
less serious reactions to lithium treatment than adults. (C.C.Nadelson, MD)

Science has confirmed that emotional fluctuations and emotional status directly
influence health. Mind/body
medicine focuses on the connection between one’s opinion of one’s health and
the physical realities. Mind/body medicine is embodied by the field of psycho
neuroimmunology (PNI), which links emotions with
chemical processes taking place throughout the body.
Mind/body medicine takes a holistic view of the healing process, believing that
because each person is unique, it follows that treatment for an individual
should also be unique. Placing emphasis on the body’s ability to regulate and
heal itself as well as on the importance of the practitioner/patient
relationship, mind/body medicine ensures that the patient is an active partner
rather than a passive recipient in all stages of treatment. Given the individual
emphasis of mind/body medicine, treatments can encompass a wide range of
modalities, including imagery, biofeedback, yoga, and hypnotherapy.
