By the way, most hosts charge a set up fee, so when shopping, be sure to include the costs of set up charges and domain names in your yearly cost total... and some hosts will wave the domain name registration ... some are so low in cost, they charge for both set up and domain registration... that's why you do a year long total cost math figuring... to save the most on your host!)

           Promotion is a number one priority after you get your site up initially and the major directories and search engines have you... There are tons of sites out there with the "best tools" "best programs" or the service that will "list our site in the first three pages for sure"

• Most sites that promote promotion and give "tips" on promotion are only going to give you their slant, their product or their idea. If you visit a site or two, you are not going to see the 'whole' picture, because the 'whole picture' in YOUR CASE will be a combination of all that you see, all the great and not so great, easy and short to long and costly, focused to wide spread, you will take some and leave some to make up your very own unique style and hence a whole new 'marketing' and submission plan!

• Plan to spend about 10% of your time checking, upgrading, "spiffing up" and adding content and/or pages to your site - It maintains them and keeps them "active" in the eyes of the most powerful search engines! Yes, it is part of the search that spider's use when they find and rate and then list sites. A super site with all the right elements and bells/whistles that has been abandoned and  not opened and worked on some by the owners, begin to  drop in ranking... if they are one the first page or the fiftieth page! Spend 10% of your time digging in your pages to do some work ...each week/day.

• Spend at least 20% looking at your stats. Answer questions such as where people are coming in, (and be sure to have your best foot forward in those pages for sure) What pages are viewed after they go to the first pages, (if any) and what pages they leave your site from all together. Is one site page such a drag that it causes people to loose their interest in your whole site? Work on that page and give it some jolt on interactive "sticky" stuff that keeps them actively doing something ... then add some 'mystery flavored' links to your other site and affiliates ... making the surfer curious to visit your pages, just to figure out what is that hint of mystery you gave .... be creative and unique. Affiliates that are not getting hits, add text or better yet, change the affiliate to a choice more in tuned to your visitor's profile and to your page! Spend 20% discovering the 'truths' and 20% actually working with what you learned

• Surf around 10% of the time and find compatible sites you enjoy or admire and that your site would compliments their surfer's needs and if you linked to them, that site would fill a need for your surfers that you don't offer... Find the ways you like them, and send an email to trade links with them, be humble, compliment their site's qualities and ask for the trade. 9 out of 10 or better will respond well (if they are still in business or active with their site). Trade by placing their link up promptly! Find also in your surfing those sites that have open links to like sites.  For example, you have a game site, go to sites that offer games AND lots of game links or an engine of them and sign up! Find a few super cool sites that are super unique too, ad them to your link's page and your surfers will look to your site for a list so grand! The more they return the better! The more pages that are NOT your domain that point to your site, (have your link on them) the higher ranking your site will be... it's called "link popularity" and spiders look to that popularity in their searches! If you find sites like a joke site (or any sort of submit by guests opportunity) that allows it's guests to submit a joke, do it! Much of those times, the submitter, (the name of your site) will have a change to display their link to their page too, go for that free exposure to their site and to the search engine's popularity search!  Finally, visit sites you enjoy for yourself. If you like the page, sign the guest book because more often that not, you will be spidered there too, a free link from almost any site with a guest book!  Spend 10% surfing! 10% of your time will pay off little by little each day, watch your numbers closely and you'll see!  *(caution. avoid message boards of a personal or semi personal subject matter and never put up a promo post anywhere without permission from the host. Be careful and appropriate.

• What impression, style, image to you want to offer the community? Do you want a lighthearted humorous image, a serious one, a stable one or a creative one? Figure it out! Colors move people. Did you ever notice that fast food restaurants have red and yellow for the majority colors? That's because it evokes hunger, the need for speed to hunger or action, excitement and so draws folk in to eat! Remember what you want and use accents, at least, to move your visitor in some way... Green: Financially well off, financially secure, secure and safe and calm and in good hands.  Blue: You get a professional feeling with blue. You give a professional appearance feeling, one that says you are in it on the up and up and the surfer's safe with you... in good hands. You know what you say and say what you mean, no sleaze stuff here. Your surfer knows that you can be trusted ... and safe in that... Blue / Green of course, gives your site both feelings, one more than the other leans toward that feeling. Red (and red offspring's) give a wild, crazy and "act now" feelings. They are daring and popular and 'out there' for the world to see their wild, want wild, use red! Tans and sunshine golden and tans with a hint of green and soft gold with a touch of green ...and soft yellow mixture in those if you like, well, they are earth bound. They make you feel better and are tied into creditability in the natures and the earth aware areas. They will know the trails to hike on or the spiders to avoid, trust that. Black is serious, no joking and commanding and over powering. Mints and Dusty Rose, for example, will distress you, make you feel calm and centered and good about life and your existence.  White is  non personal and clinical and serious. Browns are down to earth, close to tans, professional and business like. Experiment, very interesting indeed!

• 20% can be spent easily on contact with your surfers. Be it comments on a comment page, feedback for a post in a forum, answering email questions or comments or dealing with other webmasters for trades etc., being personal to all is a plus you may not think are so important. Imagine your image is "being put on display" with every correspondence! You can easily make friends by the dozens each week, who if they love you enough, will do things for you that you won't believe! Make one bad enemy and they will post hate posts in their forum, send your host hate mail and generally make life miserable (for a while too) Always be curious, complimenting and friendly. If you get hate mail from some lonely slug out there, try to please them the whole time, do your best, overdo, don't do the pride thing if you can help it with anyone online (and off) every Time spent here, is well, golden!

• Juggling your affiliates will take time and lots of reading and investigations. There are promos for you as the webmaster, new products that are selling like hotcakes, huge discounts or free shipping and handling  etc that you can promote ... if you know about them all. Visit your affiliates often and change your banners and links often for optimal sponsor income. 

• The rest of your time, you can experiment with java script, applets, a hobby, personal business, make polls, find ideas,    dabble in shock wave, a site logo or mascot, read other's options and views, look at trends and apply in a proactive manner those that you feel fit. Find out what is good for you, try it and keep it or dump it, keep up on trends and items that are "hot" in the moment you're in... just be in tune with your own place and your site will rank rank rank, you'll see a content growth, check it out!   

•   Finally, be yourself, let part of you be reflected in some essence in your site, some are turned off when they feel it's them and a machine... when it's them and you, ahh! Remember that interactive stuff rules, content is king, time is golden so spend it on your site and above all,  believe in your site, trust your instincts and have a good time relating and operating your site, it is reflective and it shines through with all you do right in your site, reflect, have fun, trust yourself, add content, take time on your site, no rush, slow and steady wins the race, but slacking off will kill it.... have fun!

It's one of the many fonts at "font com" and if you click on this new font, you will be taken there to tour some pretty creative fonts AND get some good ideas too! You don't have to buy all in all stores and you don't have to sign up for everything all the time, just look, window shop, get a few good ideas here and there, read and learn what you don't know yet, share  if they let you and leave! You can find "like" sites similar to yours and visit them taking note of any positives you see and can compliment the webmaster on. Then, you can A. Sign their guest book, if they have one, and mention that positive. There are usually places to put one's link in the signature and those, many times, are picked up by search engines and can count toward popularity. Popularity can raise your rank or rating in many search engine results. This will also show your link and compliment (in the tone matching your site, (i.e., humor signings are super for humor site owners to use when signing... this way the guest book readers may see and click on your link.. making it double the power in the one move...  or.. B. Write the webmaster, mention their site and what you liked, (better odds at a response (and a positive on at that) if you do this... and exchange links with them. It will boost you as does the first example (ranks) and will help you in community relations.  C. Often you can find a search engine on the sites you find that will allow you to add a like-url and if so, do so! That gives your a triple punch too... more views by guests to the site when using the specialty site's engine, a search result in a more detailed category search, (raises the click power to your link) and you got the bonus of adding more link popularity power!

• Sticky Power (when visitor's stay longer at your site, which of course,  increases the chances that visitor will buy a product or service!)

• Return Visitors (which means you need to offer something that is so value ridden to a visitor that it makes them come back for more - and it's your site that they want above all others with the same sort of products or services or entertainment...) 

• Those Who Would Otherwise Not Visit, Visit Now and your site's traffic increases. This can be done in several ways, by increasing exposure, word of mouth, reminders, your opt in news letter, link popularity ratings, search engine and directory successes, and offering something that you can clearly say was not a part of your site or it's plans that draw people to that page or item initially, and then the visitor wanders onto your other pages by nature and curiosity... i.e.., a greeting card service added to your yoga site may bring those interested in sending a greeting card online, but not mindful of yoga. After they send their card off, or before, they will peek into your other pages if the links and text and/or graphics etc., peek their curiosity... hence .. people who visit who never intended to. You can legally now put those keywords that are so popular and your specialty keywords in a combination that would draw in the "greeting card surfers" to your particular site.. a bonus plus in search engines / directories!

 Okay. Here is the deal with FindWhat.com and others for that matter. When I started out in about mid 1998 with some site pages and a forum, (now nearly 150,000 members strong), all the search engines were free. The only obstacle was getting past  the yahoo.com directory because frankly, because it was so easy to put up any old site with no content and just a bunch of flashing   banners, yahoo wanted to make sure they had the most relevant, just like the all do now, finally! But it was a long process and everything on your site needed to be ready and your p's and q's needed to be crossed and the long application for inclusion, was a bit intimidating. Not as many personal sties were around, not even the typical store you would had a site on all the time since the beginning of the internet, but many were not sold. I can recall when I began to surf and got my first email address and opportunity. There was no mouse to use and their was not even Windows, but rather DOS. And then to use an email address for picking up mail or sending it was odd at best. No one I knew had a computer and I don't believe there was Spam for a couple years at least, and then CAN YOU BELIEVE IT, I wanted to have Spam! I got some attention that way, something to open once and a blue moon!

But not so much anymore, and one needs to be careful. I have been through the times when I got big bucks and stuck it out when many businesses would not try anymore and folded. I had still the engines and the directories on my side, I mad e the meta tags and the keywords a game, like a personal challenge that was partly common sense, partly, knowing your audience and the average out there, party a big puzzle trying to second guess the major playing engines and directories etc., and a lot of time, research into what people wanted and were looking for, content and alt tags that were perfect in content and number and it was just fun! I soared back then often times well above the major stores or entertainment sites that were fun by entire companies and hundreds of staff! Because REMEMBER THIS: the big guys do not necessarily know more than you and they are not all wanting to hire outside designers, meta tag makers, marketers, promoters, stat folk and the list goes on. Sure a few do it all, but many have one employee doing multiple jobs in this area and they are not about to hire out when the "got someone"

So, this means you are almost at an equal playing field with more people than you think you are! In fact, maybe even better because you are not hampered and pushed into what employers want you to do.... frankly, I found that instinct, gut feelings and a bit of feedback are things that the big guys cannot get to or use as easily as you!

I learned about site engines early as a total hobby, (if you can imagine that) and a good hand full of the biggies are gone. But all those that are around now, were free once. Free to register, quick to put your page up (remember there was not a huge amount back then even when most all web sites were free.... free from every place you could imagine, free so that you could have dozens and dozens of hosts and space and bandwidth to burn!) There were not as many tricks and such, but what there was - all of it free! 

I am sort of bummed out over some of the bigwigs promises that they broke. One major engine personally cost me thousands.... but I learned.  

First people to go to with your new page and your re-done site page home is to the few free directories there are left. DMOZ, or just go to AOL and hit their submissions button and the correct screen and links will appear. It takes a while to get up, there are many people who want in and many aspects are managed by regular Joes. So do the freebies first. Another one which is free so far is Alta Vista. Go to Alta Vista right away and you can submit up to ten per sitting and when you are done, just re-do your electronic signature, (about 5 seconds worth of repeating your original task) and you have another ten you can submit! FREE!
I went out when the biggies began charging and picked the directories and engines that did not have me in them or they did but I was not high on the search. WRONG START... I had given my first payment to EXCITE and it just did not work out. To be in excite the choice was easy because they were a bargain. And while I got a few, I did not get as many as one would hope for paying for them. Remember I never paid so I never feel this is a thrilling thing. Excite is good, so long as you just per letter, as any, follow their directions. But they played in the pay thing later and when they did, you did not have to pay to get into the place and then get some great key words that would ensure your being at the top of they searches. So one can pay them all they want to appear among the normal searches that you would expect to see in a search, but not really on top, maybe never - And if you want a biggie, you have to be paying biggie money with those per words.... That's where 'findwhat' comes in. They do the keyword search purchasing thing, fairly. Some let you bid on any word and never let you in on the other sites who may have 70% paying a penny more than you and you get pushed back even though you paid money to get that same keyword. That's a drag. Watch out for the engines that make you pay for keywords but do not allow you to know details about the others. Another thing to consider is how much you pay. You can avoid the flat monthly fee, it you pay buy the click to your site, say one to three cents per person who comes in, nothing for those who just see you in the directory on the top all the time without your name being branded in their minds for future use. With that all out of the way, there is a fact that makes even the small and med. directories work in your favor in the publicities of the biggies. That factor is link popularity, and that is what you get when other sites and even other directories and engines point a link (or have a link on a page or more) that is one of yours. It must be in another domain of course, but it counts ... you could get a good amount of clicks in the sm - med. directory or engine you chose and then in turn your other so/so ranking in the big ones, will be picking up too.. And this particular engine has worked well, and is a good start for nearly every small or new or stale site needing a boost!
