On the evening before Samhain, folks left foodstuff on their doorsteps to keep hungry spirits from entering their house. Festival goers dressed up in ghost, witch, and goblin costumes so that the wandering spirits would leave them alone and they'd be safe

                                                         The word witch comes from the Saxon word wicca, which means "wise one."

Welcome to our Halloween Haunted Shack, our dreadful little trap, 
our online version of those  Haunted House scare fests but in the comfort, (comfort?) of your own house! 

Specialists believe the druids were the first to observe Halloween. Dating back to 700 B.C., they make merry the fair of Samhain (the end of the harvest and a occasion to honor the dead) on November 1. In the consequent years, the night before became known as the Eve of All Hallows - Hallow Even, and a.k.a. Hallow e'en.
Orange and black became Halloween colors because of orange is associated with harvests and black is associated with death. Black cats, those traditional Halloween icons, were at first believed to be witches' household animals… a kind of creation assistant who protected the witches' powers from harmful forces.


Halloween is the 8th largest card-sending occasion. There are over 28 million Halloween cards sent each year!

Halloween is second only to Christmas in spending. Consumers will spend over $2.5 Billion during Halloween. That's a whole lot of candy, costumes, decorations, and party goods.

 

What kind of music does ghosts like? Ans: Rhythm and boos!

 

 

 

 

The Gun Inn Pub in London, England, is said to be haunted by this famous sailor... Horatio Nelson. Lord Horatio Nelson was a naval commander best known for his victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. His ghost has been seen late at night, strolling through the pub or its corridors. It is said that Lord Nelson often secretly met with Lady Emma Hamilton, his mistress, at this spot.

 

Halloween traditions of trick-or-treating and jack-o-lanterns were brought to America in the 1840s by Irish escaping the Great Potato Famine. On Halloween, Irish peasants begged the rich for food and played practical jokes on those who refused. To avoid being tricked, the rich handed out cookies, candies, and fruit - a practice that turned into our present day trick-or-treating.
