Electroconvulsive
therapy (ECT) is: contrary to popular mythology, is a safe and effective form of
treatment.
ECT has come a long way and is virtually painless and has little side effects
for most patients, many have none.
Some of the more common side effects are a headache immediately following the treatment which goes away with or without a pain medication and in a few temporary short term memory loss, (compare it to a short term black out, a fuzzy period like you may feel directly after waking up suddenly and needing a moment to collect your thoughts... again, this almost always passes.
I have personally witnessed it in use on several patients such as 2 elderly gentlemen and a women about 40ish, (the first two I have ever witnessed in person over the course of their treatments). The three did not have side effects at all and the women who barely talked and did not participate in conversations, eating, reading or pretty much anything at all, over the course of 6 treatments began to do those things and more. By the end of her 8 treatments she was laughing and playing volleyball with some young adults in the hospital, a totally new woman after over a year of near silence and staring.
Details
of the Treatments are (mostly) every other day for 6 to 12 treatments, avg.
8
The actual shock is very low voltage, the patient is asleep, the arms and legs
are tied to the table to prevent any jerking for that fraction of a second from
going 'wild' and hitting something or someone, breaking etc. Their is a mouth guard
for similar reasons ..to
prevent biting the tongue, muscle relaxant is used, (a shot before the
treatment) so that the muscles won't try to tighten and stress out that
way.
The benefit comes not really from the shock but the mini convulsion that occurs after that very fast shock... the trembling of the fingers and toes, just the tips mostly, is all that you would typically see react. Then the patient is woken up and can almost immediately sit up, stretch a moment and walk away without bed rest or recovery. It's fast, low is shock, high in precautions to make it even more safe, pain free and effective for the most part. ..
It is generally
used for individuals with severe depression and for
patients
who have run the gambit of medications to treat their depression, but the
medications have not worked. It is also used for those who cannot tolerate medication because of a medical condition.
It is often used for those who are at immediate risk for suicide.
Treatment can be successful for good, (in case of depression), or hold off symptoms and massive medications etc., for on avg. 3 years, (bipolar). Less medication is needed and life can be more 'normal' for the bipolar patient and depression lifted for those who suffer depression...
